Chai Tea Latte Recipe

The fall season is upon us! One of my favorite things about fall and winter is enjoying warm drinks! Sure, I drink tea all through the summer, but it's even better when it's cold outside. So I'm taking advantage of this season by making this delicious chai tea latte! I always order chai tea lattes whenever I go to coffee shops (since I don't really like coffee!) and I've been wanting to try and make it at home. This recipe makes enough for three to five servings, so you can enjoy it all week!

Instead of brewing the tea with a store-bought teabag, I simmered water on the stove with an array of ground and whole spices to create the tea. Afterward, I strained the mixture through a coffee filter to get rid of all the gritty spices. However, if this is too involved for your liking, you can skip this part and simply brew some tea with a teabag.

The milk is warmed on the stove, then turned frothy using an immersion blender.

Chai Tea Latte

Ingredients
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 black tea bag
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 allspice
  • 1 whole star anise
  • pinch of freshly ground black peppercorns
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tbsp packed brown sugar (depending on your sweetness preference)
  • 3/4 cup low fat milk
In a medium pot, whisk together the water, spices, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Once it is boiling, turn off the stove and allow the tea to simmer in the pot for about five minutes. Then, add the black tea bag and the vanilla extract and bring the water back to a boil. Once the water is boiling, turn off the stove again and allow the tea bag to steep for ten minutes.

Set a fine mesh strainer over a bowl. Then, place a coffee filter inside the strainer. Pour the tea from the pot through the coffee filter and strainer and into the bowl.

Measure a 1/2 cup of the tea and pour it into a mug. Store the rest in the refrigerator for later use.

Now, pour the milk into a pot and add a pinch of ground cinnamon, if desired. Bring to a simmer, stirring often. Once the milk begins to bubble, take it off the heat and pour it into a deep bowl. Blend with an immersion blender until the milk is frothy.

Reheat the 1/2 cup of chai tea in the microwave if needed. Then, add the milk. Taste the latte to see if it is too sweet. If it is, just add some boiling water to dilute the sugar.
